Greek neos ‘new’ + horstii. Named for German-Brazilian cactus collector Leopold (Leopoldo) Horst (1918-1987), who discovered the species together with Heinrich Büneker in 1965. Notocactus neohorstii was a new name for Wigginsia horstii F.Ritter (1979) to avoid homonymy with Notocactus horstii F.Ritter (1966) (= Parodia horstii). It was named only for Horst because he had previously discovered Wigginsia horstii var. juvenaliformis (now considered a synonym of Parodia neohorstii).
