Greek neos ‘new’ + buenekeri. Named for German cactus collector Rudolf Heinrich “Heinz” Büneker, who discovered the species together with Leopoldo Horst. Ritter (Kakteen Südamerika 1: 182. 1979): “The name Notocactus buenekeri was intended by me for this species. However, after [Hans] Krainz had recombined Parodia buenekeri into Notocactus buenekeri [= Parodia alacriportana] in 1966, the specific name for the novelty described here had to be changed.”
