Etymology

Named for German botanist Carl Troll (1899-1975), who discovered the species in 1927. Published simultaneously as Cereus trollii, Oreocereus trollii and Pilocereus trollii. Kupper: “I have named it Cereus Trollii in honor of its discoverer; under Schumann’s naming system it must therefore be called Pilocereus Trollii, under that of Britton and Rose Oreocereus Trollii.”
