Etymology

Named for German botanist Friedrich Ritter (1898-1989), who collected the species in Ayacucho, Peru. Cullmann: “With its protruding, cotton-white woolly hairs, O. ritteri has a striking appearance and is one of the most beautiful species that Ritter has discovered. It is fair that this beautiful plant bears the name of its discoverer, who has enriched our collections with so many valuable new finds. That is why I have named it after Friedrich Ritter.”
