Etymology

Greek pseudo– ‘false, appearing to be’ + fossulatus. A new name for Cleistocactus fossulatus to avoid homonymy with Oreocereus fossulatus (Labour.) Backeb. (1934).

Hunt (in Bradley 9: 89. 1991):

Ritter’s observation […] that Backeberg misidentified Pilocereus fossulatus Labouret seems to have gained general acceptance, but his continued use of the name Oreocereus fossulatus (Labouret) Backeberg for the misidentified species (whilst placing Pilocereus fossulatus in the synonymy of O. celsianus) violates the rules of nomenclature. Mottram has redescribed Backeberg’s plant as Cleistocactus fossulatus Mottram, a course which was permissible under the rules, if rather inadvisable, but when it is retained in Oreocereus, which is my preference, the plant requires a new name.
