Greek streptos ‘twisted’ + Greek akantha βspineβ. For the spines, described by Lemaire as “twisted in a zigzag” (“tordues en zigzag”).
According to David Griffiths and Raleigh Frederick Hare (The Tuna as Food for Man: 50. 1907) the fruit of this species is called tuna cardona in Mexico.
