Greek pachyrrhizos ‘with thick roots’. For the “massive rhizome” which is used by the local people “in the preparation of splints for domestic animals (e.g., goats, cows, mules) with broken bones” (Hernández, Gómez-Hinostrosa & Bárcenas).
