Latin lÅ«tÄ•us ‘saffron-yellow’. For the color of the epidermis. Rose: “Prof. [William Ashbrook] Kellerman [who discovered the species] says it differs from N. guatemalensis [= Opuntia auberi] in having a honey-yellow green color instead of gray green.” Not for the color of the flowers (Eggli & Newton, Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004), which Rose described as “of a lighter red color [compared to N. guatemalensis]”.
