Etymology

GreekΒ leukosΒ β€˜white’ + Greek thrix (stem trich-) ‘hair’. For the “bristly to hair-like” white spines (De Candolle: “aculeis […] setaceo-capillaceis inermibus albis patentibus”).

The Spanish name for the fruit of this species, tuna durasnilla blanca ‘white peach pricklypear’ (Griffiths & Hare, The Tuna as Food for Man: 56. 1907), refers to the white to light yellow color of the fruit.
