Etymology

Stapelia + Latin –aster, a suffix denoting an in complete resemblance. For the resemblance to Stapelia, possibly Stapelia caespitosa (= Duvalia caespitosa), see Opuntia stapeliae (= Cylindropuntia tunicata). Heß called this group, in which he included Opuntia tunicata (= Cylindropuntia tunicata) and Opuntia cylindrica (= Austrocylindropuntia cylindrica), Säulenopuntien ‘columnar opuntias’.
