Opuntia ellemeetiana
Miq. (1859)
Etymology
๐ต Author(s) | Frederik Anton Wilhelm Miquel | ๐ต Published in | Ned. Kruidk. Arch. iv.: 337 (1859) |
Named for Dutch politician and cactus collector Jonkheer Willem Cornelis Mary de Jonge van Ellemeet (1811-1888), who had this species in his collection at Overduin, Zeeland, the Netherlands. The claim by Crook & Mottram (Bradleya 14: 99-144. 1996) that the name refers to “the garden of Mr. de Jonge at Ellemeet, in Overduin Zeelandiae” is based on a misinterpretation of Miquel’s text (“Cactearum species novae, e collectione Domini de Jonge ab Ellemeet in villรข Overduin Zeelandiae”).
