Not explained by Howell. Perhaps Latin echios ‘viper’s bugloss (Echium vulgare)’. Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004): “perhaps for the similarity of the dense fine spination to the rough bristly hairiness of Viper’s Bugloss.”
