Latin dēsertus ‘deserted, solitary’, but the intended meaning is probably ‘growing in the desert’ (Latin dēserti ‘wastelands, desert’). For the occurrence in the “desert region of Nevada” (“Wüstenregion von Nevada”). Not “Isolated Opuntia” (Crook & Mottram in Bradleya 14: 133.1996).
