Latin dējectus ‘hanging downwards’. For the drooping branches. Salm-Dyck: “Stem segments thin and variously spread out or hanging downwards” (“Articuli […] macri et varie diffusi seu dejecti”). Not “for the low growth” (Eggli & Newton, Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004).
