Etymology

Latin Curassavicus ‘from Curaçao’. For the occurrence on Curaçao.

The species is known in the Dutch Carribean in English as cylindrical prickly pear and in Papiamento as infrou, sumpiña di colebra (Aruba), kaka di pushi (Curaçao), yùfrou (Bonaire, Curaçao), tuna di colebra (Aruba), librá (Curaçao), kalibru (Curaçao), tuna Spañó and pupu di pushi (Bonaire) (Cylindrical Prickly Pear Opuntia curassavica, Dutch Caribbean Species Register, accessed July 19, 2022).
