Chaco + Latin –ensis, geographical suffix. For the occurrence “in the forests of the northern and southern Chaco”. The spelling with k serves to retain the original pronunciation of the second c in Chaco. The epithet is sometimes spelled according to the Spanish convention as chaquensis or changed to chacoensis (cf. Quiabentia chacoensis Backeb.), but it is not correctable under the International Code of Nomenclature. Compare Eriosyce eriosyzoides.
