Latin bÄ•nÄ•dictus ‘blessed’. For the occurrence on the San Benito Islands (Spanish San Benito ‘Saint Benedict’) off the west coast of Baja California, Mexico. This is a nomen nudum listed on a herbarium specimen in the Smithsonian Department of Botany Collections, tentatively identified by Jon Paul Rebman (Madroño 62(1): 53. 2015) as Cylindropuntia cedrosensis.
