Etymology

Latin băsĭlāris ‘basal’. Engelmann & Bigelow: “Habit very different from any other of our Opuntiæ; the stout obovate or fan-shaped joints (5-8 inches long) originate from a common base, forming a sort of rosette.”

The English names Trelease beavertail cactus and Trelease’s beavertail prickly pear are based on Opuntia treleasii, which is now considered a synonym of Opuntia basilaris.
