Latin austrīnus ‘southern’. For the occurrence in “southern peninsular Florida and the Keys” (Small). The rather unusual epithet austrinus whas presumably chosen to avoid homonymy with Opuntia australis (= Pterocactus australis) (Latin austrālis ‘southern’).
