Etymology

Greek ophis ‘snake’ + Rhipsalis. For the snake-like branches and the affinity to Rhipsalis. Compare the name of the type species, Ophiorhipsalis lumbricoides (= Lepismium lumbricoides), from Latin lumbricus ‘earthworm, intestinal worm’ + Greek –oeidΔ“s β€˜resembling’.

Schumann later (Gesamtbeschr. Kakt. Nachtr. 1903; Keys Monogr. Cact. 1903) adopted the spelling Ophiorrhipsalis (cf. Acanthorhipsalis, Calamorhipsalis, Goniorhipsalis, Phyllorhipsalis).
