Etymology

Greek notos ‘south wind’ + Cactus. Schumann (Gesamtbeschr. Kakt.: 379. 1898): “The whole group belongs exclusively to South America.” Austrocactus has the same meaning.

Not from Greek nо̄ton, nо̄tos ‘back, ridge’. The German name Buckelkaktus ‘hump cactus’ (Helm, Biologie der Kakteen: 66. 2010) seems to be based on this misinterpretation. Sometimes misspelled Nothocactus under the influence of Greek nothos ‘bastard, hybrid, spurious’.

“Botanical Latin is essentially a written language, but the scientific names of plants often occur in speech. How they are pronounced really matters little provided they sound pleasant and are understood by all concerned.”
