Etymology

Spanish nopal, Nahuatl nopalli ‘prickly pear (Opuntia sp.)’. The type species is commonly called nopal. It is unclear if Salm-Dyck was aware of Nopal M.Ocampo (1844); he attributed Nopalea to himself. He did name Cereus ocamponis (= Selenicereus ocamponis) after Ocampo in the same work.
