Etymology

Greek neos ‘new’ + Tanahashi + Latin -a, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a vowel other than a (Rec. 60B.1(a), International Code of Nomenclature). Apparently named for a Mr. Tanahashi (ItΓ΄ also published the name Chamaelobivia tanahashii; the suffix –i indicates Tanahashi was a man), perhaps a Japanese cactus enthusiast. The purpose of the prefix Neo- is unclear since there is no genus called Tanahashia.
