Etymology

Greek makros β€˜long’ + Greek stibas ‘bed of straw, mattress’, translated by Schumann as German Polster ‘cushion’. For the felted short shoots on the stems, described by Schumann as “very large woolly cushions […] which gradually rise up and finally become remarkably thick, cylindrical or conical protrusions 5 cm in length and 3.5 cm in diameter”.
