Etymology

Arequipa + Latin –ensis, geographical suffix. For the occurrence in Arequipa, Peru.

The species is known in Quechua as sapang haurni ‘lonely woman’ (David Yetman, The Great Cacti: Ethnobotany & Biogeography: 209. 2007) and kuris (Academia Mayor de la Lengua Quechua de Qosqo, Diccionario: Quechua-Español-Quechua. Segunda edicíon. 2005 [as Cereus macrostibas]).
