Latin sub- ‘almost, more or less’ + Latin gibbosus ‘gibbous, asymmetrically swollen’. For the plant body that is somewhat tuberculate, but less so than Echinocactus gibbosus = Gymnocalycium gibbosum. Haworth placed both species in Echinocactus sect. Gibbosi.
