Greek neos ‘new’ + Lemaireocereus. Backeberg wanted to split off Lemaireocereus hollianus from all other species in Lemaireocereus and retain the name Lemaireocereus for latter group, but since L. hollianus is the type species of Lemaireocereus that was not possible. He considered Neolemaireocereus the “real” Lemaireocereus because, in his opinion, the included species conformed better to the description of Lemaireocereus than did L. hollianus.
