Greek neos ‘new’ + Dawson + Latin -ĭa, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a consonant (Rec. 60B.1(b), International Code of Nomenclature). Named for American botanist Elmer Yale Dawson (1918-1966), who described the type species (as Cephalocereus apicicephalium). Dawsonia R.Br. (1811) is a moss genus.
