Etymology

Greek neos ‘new’ + Bessey + Latin -Δa, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a consonant (Rec. 60B.1(b), International Code of Nomenclature). Named for Charles Edwin Bessey (1845-1915), “professor in the University of Nebraska and for many years one of our eminent botanical teachers.” The prefix neo- prevents homonymy with Besseya Rydb. (1903), a genus in the family Scrophulariaceae named in honor of the same person.
