Etymology

Morawetz + Latin -Ä­a, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a consonant (Rec. 60B.1(b), International Code of Nomenclature). Named for American philanthropist Victor Morawetz (1859-1938), who financed the expedition in Peru during which the genus was discovered. Backeberg also named Cleistocactus morawetzianus in his honor in the same publication.
