Latin vĭŏlācĕus ‘violet’ + Latin –flōrus ‘flowered’. For the color of the flowers, described by Buining in Latin as “violace[us]” and in German as “violett” on the outside and “etwas heller violett-blau” (“slightly lighter violet-blue”) on the inside.
