Named for Dutch cactus enthusiast Gerardus Elias Maria βGerardβ Uil (1908-2002). Brederoo & Bercht: “The taxon is named for Mr G.E.M. Uil from Bemmel. He has studied the plant extensively and compared it with the other Micranthocerei and in particular with M. flaviflorus. The description has been made partly on the basis of his opinion.” See also Melocactus glauxianus.
