Etymology

Greek spatangos, spatangÄ“s ‘sea urchin’. Not explained by Pfeiffer. Presumably for the shape of the plant body and the spination. See also Melocactus spatanginus.

Hort.Berol. (horti Berolinensi) means “from the Berlin (botanical) garden”.
