Melocactus neoviridescens

Melocactus neoviridescens Guiggi ()
🌵 Author(s)
Etymology

Greek neos ‘new’ + Latin viridescens ‘greening, greenish’ (translated as ‘to be green’ by Guiggi). For the color of the epidermis.

This nomen novum for Melocactus pachyacanthus subsp. viridis N.P.Taylor was chosen “to avoid the homonymy with Melocactus viridescens (Torrey et A.Gray) Nuttall ex Teschemacher and the confusion with some previous varietal taxa (i.e. Melocactus communis var. viridis Pfeiffer, Melocactus zehntneri var. viridis F.Ritter).” (The Melocactus viridis Lawr. mentioned in IPNI is based on a misreading of Melocactus communis [var.] viridis.)
