Etymology

Greek makros ‘large’ + Greek akantha ‘spine’. For the long spines. The epithet was spelled as macrocanthos by Salm-Dyck (Britton & Rose, Cactaceae 3: 222. 1922) and as macrocanthus by Link & Otto.

The species is known in Papiamento as milon di seru (Bonaire, Curaçao), kabes di Indjan (Bonaire, Curaçao), bushi (Aruba, Bonaire) and kabes di seru (Curaçao) (Melocactus macracanthos, Dutch Caribbean Species Register, accessed July 12, 2022).
