Etymology

Greek glaux (stem glauk-) ‘little owl (Athene noctua)’ + Latin –ĭānus, adjectival suffix (the epithet should have been glaucianus). Named for Dutch cactus enthusiast Gerardus Elias Maria “Gerard” Uil (1908-2002). Brederoo & Bercht: “Melocactus glauxianus is named for Mr G.E.M. Uil of Bemmel, a collaborator of the late A.F.H. Buining. Mr Uil has devoted his entire cactus hobby to the study and propagation of the plants found by Buining. Because the name uilianus would cause difficulties in pronunciation among non-Dutch speakers, the Greek equivalent for the word uil [Dutch uil ‘owl’] was chosen with the consent of the person concerned.” Curiously enough Brederoo & Bercht published the name Micranthocereus uilianus later the same year.
