Etymology

Named for Brazilian cactus specialist Eddie Esteves Pereira (1939). Braun: “I name this highly interesting and extremely characteristic Melocactus in honor of my friend and frequent travel companion Eddie Esteves Pereira (Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil), who years ago acquired the first specimens of this new species from so-called garimpeiros (gold diggers) at the market in Manaus and thus became aware of the peculiarity of this species.”
