Meierocactus muelleri
('Mülleri') Gräser, nom. fict. (1931)
Etymology
🌵 Author(s) | Robert Gräser |
A fictional example of a patronymic name that gives no useful information about the plant itself (Monatsschr. Deutsch. Kakteen-Ges. 1931(10): 235). Meier and Müller are two of the most common German surnames (so geläufig wie Meier und Müller ‘as common as Smith and Jones’).
Curt Backeberg (Cactaceae 5: 2668. 1961) assumed Gräser was referring to Maierocactus (a synonym of Astrophytum) and German Astrophytum collector Heinrich Moeller (1882-1945).
