Greek makros βlargeβ + Greek pteron βwingβ. For the large stems (often described as wing-like, cf. the 19th-century German name FlΓΌgelkaktus ‘wing cactus’ for Phyllocactus). Lemaire: “It is apparently, if not the biggest (Phyll[ocactus] grandis Nob.), then at least the most robust of the genus, the one with the largest branches (whence the name!).”
