Etymology

Latin maritimus ‘of the sea’ + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. For the occurrence on rocks alongside the coastal plain between ChaviΓ±a and Pescadores in southern Peru.

The name was spelled Maritinocereus (and one time Martinocereus) in the protologue. According to Ronald S. Byles (in W. Taylor Marshall, Borzicactus and Maritimocereus, Saguaroland 8(8), 1954: 91-92), Akers and Buining agreed with him that the correct spelling is Maritimocereus. W. Taylor Marshall (Saguaroland Bulletin 8(6), 1954) used the spelling Martinicereus, which was misquoted by Hans Krainz (Die Kakteen, 1. VIII. 1962) as Maritinicereus.
