Etymology

Latin margĭnātus ‘having a border or margin’ + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. Named after the only included species, Marginatocereus marginatus (Cereus marginatus), which is named after the row of areoles along the ribs connected by woolly extensions.

Generic names of this type are discouraged in Recommendation 20A.1(g) of the International Code of Nomenclature (“Authors forming generic names should comply with the following: […] Not use a name similar to or derived from the epithet in the name of one of the species of the genus.”).
