Woburn + Latin –ensis, geographical suffix. For its presence in the cactus collection of British politician and plant enthusiast John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford (1766-1839), at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire, England. Britton and Rose changed the spelling of the epithet to woburnensis, but the latinized spelling voburnensis is not a correctable error.
