Etymology

Latin rŏsĕus ‘rose-colored, rosy, ruddy’ + Latin albus ‘white’. For the color of the spines. Bödeker: “This plant is conspicuous for and named after its white and reddish colored spines, often with a magnificent effect in the play of colors.” Based on the trade name Mammillaria roseoleuca (Greek leukos ‘white’), which Bödeker probably rejected because it combines Greek and Latin elements.

Not for the “pale red to pink-white flowers” (Genaust, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996).
