Latin pecten (stem pectÄn-) ‘comb’ + Latin –fer (feminine –fÄ•ra) ‘bearing’. For the comb-like arrangement of the spines. Published as a new name for Pelecyphora aselliformis var. pectinata hort. to avoid homonymy with Mammillaria pectinata Engelm. (1856) (= Coryphantha echinus).
