Etymology

Greek о̄on ‘egg’ + Greek thēlē ‘nipple’. For the egg-shaped tubercles. Lemaire published the name Mammillaria ovimamma (Latin ōvum ‘egg’ + Latin mamma ‘nipple’) for a different species in the same book, translating both names into French as “Mam[millaria] dont les mamelons ont la forme d’un œuf” and noting that Mammillaria ovimamma was perhaps a mere variety of Mammillaria oöthele. They are now both considered synonyms of Mammillaria polythele.
