Etymology

Latin cirrus ‘tendril’ + Latin –ōsus ‘full of’. For the “tendril-shaped” (“rankenförmig”) central spines that curve in different directions. Sometimes misspelled cirrhosa under the influence of the unrelated cirrhosis.
