Etymology

Latin Carmenĭae, genitive (possessive) form of Carmenĭa, latinization of Carmen. Named for Castañeda’s wife Prof. Carmen González de Castañeda. The original spelling carmenae is correctable to carmeniae under article 60.8 of the International Code of Nomenclature. The name does not refer to the occurrence on Isla Carmen, as the common name Isla Carmen pincushion cactus suggests.
