Named for American botanist Townshend Stith Brandegee (1843-1925), who collected the type specimen in 1889.
The original spelling brandegei (used by both Coulter and Brandegee) is correctable to brandegeei under article 60.9 of the International Code of Nomenclature. It is based on the implicit latinization Brandegeus, which is explicitly listed as not acceptable in art. 60.9 ex. 31.
