Etymology

Named for Hans Werner Fittkau’s brother, German zoologist Ernst Josef Fittkau (1927-2012). Fittkau: “I name it after my brother, the biologist Dr Ernesto JosĆ© Fittkau, with whom I was given the opportunity to explore extensive regions of warm America along ‘cacti trails’. Through conferences, he has contributed a lot to making Mexico and its cacti known in Germany.”
