Etymology

Latin aurĕus ‘golden’ + Latin lānātus ‘woolly’. For the “silky yellow cover of hairy spines” (“seidige[s] gelbe[s] Haarstachelkleid”) covering the plant body. Published as a new name for Mammillaria cephalophora Quehl, which is a younger homonym of Mammillaria cephalophora Salm-Dyck (= Coryphantha pycnacantha [Hunt in Bradleya 1: 110. 1983]). Backeberg: “I believe that the name Mam[millaria] aureilanata does even more justice to the beauty of this species than Quehl’s name.”
